Mauren brodbeck- Urbanscapes
Mauren Brodbeck was born in Geneva in 1974. In her series 'Urbanscape' and 'Cityscape' she photographed buildings in both Los Angeles and Geneva. She was first trained in photography ,she then went on to study in the fields of film-making and cinematography. Brodbeck currently works as a photographer and her work is displayed in many galleries in Switzerland, France and Germany. In most of her photographs she removes a building and replaces it with a silhouette changing the colour of the building, thus creating an unusual and enticing photograph. Brodbeck is currently working on/ with a number of series and publishes, she is part of a series called 'Both sides of the Sunset' : Photographing Los Angeles which focuses on coastline beaches, natural beauty and suburban life.
This work by Mauren Brodbeck is my favourite as the blue building is the main focus of the piece. The 3D effect attracts the attention of the eye, making the building stand out. The bold colour of the building completely contrasts to the surrounding environment, bringing a sense of vibrancy to the everyday mundane square in New York. I like how Brodbeck has intentionally deployed the use of bright colours, as this is totally unique to other simple landscape photographs. I feel as this image captures the essence of New York as it captures a lively bustling city covered in bright and enticing colours.

Daniel Kukla
Daniel Kukla is a photographer based in New York City, in his most recent expedition he creates a different view of a standard landscape photograph with the use of a mirror. The usage of the mirror creates a contemporary, newly discovered outlook on a natural landscape and brings the natural and man made world together. This creates a colour balance that accentuates the beauty of the surrounding landscape.
This is one of my favourite photograph's by Kukla as the use of the mirror really contrasts the beautiful surrounding environment to the more rocky, barren parts of the landscape. The use of a mirror creates a different perspective of the landscape and creates a more unusual photograph. This method isn't widely used and is a new technique that really brings out the natural beauty of a landscape using a man-made object thus bringing the mirror and the landscape together. |
Brad sloan
Brad Sloan is a photographer from the pacific north west, in his photography he changes the colour saturation to give depth to the surrounding environment. In most of Sloan's work he manually flips the photo he has taken so the environment is reflected. Sloan searches in his photographic work for, structure and light, by looking at scenes from unique perspectives like the ocean photograph above. His inspiration comes from the natural world and urban structures, but also from other photographers an artists.

The 5 rules of photography composition
Filling the frame
Filling the frame ensures that only the subject matter can be seen, it forces the viewer to focus on what you have taken a photograph of. It removes any distractions and unwanted information from the frame.
Vantage point
Changing your vantage point can be simple as standing on top of something or crouching down. Changing the vantage point of each photograph provides a unique perspective, that you wouldn't necessarily see in 'everyday' photographs.
Framing the subject
Framing the subject is used to draw attention to the subject matter. The subject of the frame should be surrounded by a naturally occurring frame like a tunnel or bridge.
Depth of field
Depth of field is used to create depth and perspective in a photograph. A narrow depth of field allows you to manipulate an image by focusing on the subject matter , this subsequently draws attention to the subject of the photograph. A large depth of field allows the whole shot to be in focus simultaneously creating a sense of depth as well as being in focus.
Rule of thirds
The rule of thirds means that the subject of the photograph is off centre and is the only thing visible in the frame. The only thing that should be visible is the subject matter this allows the subject of the photograph to be the main focus.
artist replication- inspired by Daniel Kukla
The photographs were taken in Bushy park, this was because of Daniel Kukla's use of natural landscape in his photographs. The use of the mirror brings an unusual sense to the photograph that makes them stand-out. It does this in different ways, the simple addition to the photograph of the mirror and the fact that it isn't naturally there makes these photographs unique and unusual. I believe this photo- shoot to be a success as I have recreated the essence of Kukla's photography in my own photographs with the use of the mirror. The use of the mirror differentiates between different parts of the landscape but brings them together in one photograph, for example the green and leafy part of the park and the stream. Or the dead tree and the vibrant leaves.

The objective of my first photo-shoot was to see how glass effects the photograph and the landscape in which it was taken. My first photo-shoot was more of a trial photo-shoot as I had to get myself accustomed with the usage of glass in my photography. The different usages of the goldfish bowl and the wine glass filled with water give different reflections of the environments therefore different perspectives. The usage of a goldfish creates a more unusual view of my garden that wouldn't of created the same effect on the photograph otherwise.
This is my favourite of the photographs in the style of Daniel Kukla as it captures the essence of Kukla's photography, I like the contrast between the dark colours of the dead tree and the landscape and the light grey colour of the sky. The mirror provides clear reflections of the dead tree and literally flips it in the mirror, but in the same photograph. The mirror gives the landscape a different perspective and makes the landscape stand out.
Photo Shoot 1- my garden
This is my favourite photograph from my first photo-shoot as it demonstrates the 'reflection' effect I was striving for. The usage of the water distorts the background but because the background is partially in focus we are still able to determine what the background is and what I'm trying to capture in this photograph. This being my first shoot I will obviously have to make changes regarding where I take the Photographs but also I will need to question whether the wine glass would be the best reflective material/object to create the best reflective effect.

Photo shoot 2
Central london
The aim of this photoshoot was to test the difference between night and day reflected photography. This photoshoot was partially successful as the lights reflect in the glass and the colours of London stand out. The glass isn't always visible as it was a night shoot so doesn't always create the 'reflected' effect in the glass, but this photoshoot was beneficial to me as I know what to in future photoshoots.
This is my favourite photograph from my 2nd photo-shoot as the background is out of focus but the wine glass is in focus this creates depth in the photograph . It also captures the reflective effect I am trying to capture, The lights make the river reflective, this adds to the photograph as a whole and accentuates the colours and lights. It is obvious that in my next photo-shoots I will need take photographs at a time of day heavy in natural light as it is slightly too dark , but I'm glad that I tested this as I'm now aware of how to get the photograph's at the best time of day for my aim and theme of reflection.
Photo shoot 3 - oxford street
The aim of this photo shoot was to improve upon my previous photos and to see how they differed from them. These photographs were taken in Oxford Street, a busy, well lit, part of central London. I think this photo shoot worked well as the location was well lit and the glass created the effect I was striving for. I think these photos represent a typical day in London but the usage of the glass sets this apart from the background in the photo as the reflection is contrasted with it and physically reflects it. The heavy light brings out the reflections and the colours and adds to the photograph because of it.
These 2 photographs are my favourite as the glass accentuates the lights and colours in Oxford street. In the first photo the background is in focus and the glass is out of focused but is still reflective. The second photo is darker and more in focus. It also properly reflects the colourful lights in Oxford street, making them the subject of the piece, the background is blurry but it is obvious what the background is. This 'blurred' effect accentuates the colours, this ties in with the bright colours of Oxford street making the piece stand out as a whole.
Photoshoot- 4 waterloo bridge and south bank
This is one of my favourite photographs from this shoot, as it is essentially the idea I had when the brief was given to us. The use of the glass reflects and distorts London and isn't attainable without the use of the glass. The picture provides enough information so that you tell what the background is. The natural light provides a blue tint to the photograph this helps depict London in a different light. Obviously some of these photographs have hands in them because the goldfish bowl couldn't be placed so in my next shoot this needs to be rectified.
photoshoot- 5 piccadilly circus and waterloo bridge
These are some of my favourite photographs from my final photo-shoot as the use of the goldfish bowl really distorts the adverts in Piccadilly circus. The area was well lit and creates a vibrant and abstract reflection in the goldfish bowl, but some of adverts are in focus so it is obvious what I'm trying to capture. The goldfish bowl adds to the distortion of the environment and adds to the clarity of the pieces. In both of these photographs I have used rule of thirds and have filled the frame completely , I feel this makes the pieces more aesthetically pleasing.
Photo-shop enhancements
In photo-shop I have altered the brightness and contrast to bring out the colours in the photographs to make them more aesthetically pleasing, this has helped contribute to the photographs as a whole as the photographs subsequently looked better. I have also decided to change the colour balance to help contribute the 'mood' of the piece, it also helps bring out the colour of the surrounding environment, tying the pieces together.
a04: personal presentation
Present a personal and meaningful response that realises intentions and, where appropriate, makes connections between visual and other elements.
